Winds of change were really seen blowing over Kashmir Valley as schools unfurled the national flags; all the buildings and public places were illuminated in its colours and many groups of young men and women took out rallies to mark the 75th year of India’s Independence.

The focus was on Muzzaffar Wani, headmaster of a school in Tral, South Kashmir, who unfurled the tricolous in his school as the students sang the national anthem.

Wani happens to be the father of Hibzul Mujahidden commander Burhan Wani who was killed by the Army in south Kashmir in 2016. Pakistan had eulogized Burhan as a role model for Kashmiris as even released a postal stamp in his memory.

The fact is that Burhan was more of a social media sensation and not a hardcore terrorist. He was part of a 10-member gang and all its members were killed in quick succession.

Pakistani trolls had been spreading rumours on social media about Muzaffar Wani prior to Independence Day. They were alleging he has resigned in protest against being pressurized to unfurl the tricolour.

This apparently was a pressure tactic used by the overground workers of pro-Pakistani groups who are responsible for running campaigns against Kashmir not on their side.

However, Wani, who has lost his two sons to terrorism, came on social media to give a clarification.  He said he had not resigned nor was he being pressurized by any quarter for following any instruction.

It may be recalled that Burhan Wani’s father is a member of the Jamiat-e-Islami organisation. After his son’s killing, Kashmir Valley was forced to go for a four-month lockdown by stone pelters.’

Muzaffar Wani had gone to Bengaluru at the Ashram of spiritual guru Shri Shri Ravi Shankar for healing and peace sometime after his son’s killing.
