It was on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s insistence that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid a visit to the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) last week to check about the veracity of the media reports about the high death rate of the University’s faculty due to the Covid-19.

Yogi Adityanath had paid a visit to the campus and spent times discussing the situation of Covid-19 infection there.

Sources told news agency UNI that Prime Minister was concerned after the news reports of high death rate in the University. He had also called the Vice-Chancellor Tariq Mansoor to enquire about the situation there.

The vice-chancellor informed the Prime Minister about the factual position. It seems the alarm was caused when the newspaper reports clubbed the deaths of old-time and retired faculty members, who lived in other places, with the death toll on the campus and it turned out to be a big number.

It maybe recalled that Prime Minister has struck an emotional chord with the University during his virtual address to the teachers and students on the centenary celebrations of the AMU in January. He had praised the contribution of the University in research and also suggested many research ideas to the students.

Chief Minister Yogi visited the AMU campus and went around the Covid-19 treatment centre and other related facilities on the campus for the treatment of the Covid patients.

Adityanath also met the Vice-Chancellor and other faculty members of the University and asked them if the government needs to chip in in any manner to improve the situation.

Vice Chancellor told the CM that only 16 deaths have occurred due to Covid-19 on the campus. Of these, nine persons had died in the AMU's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital; three in private hospitals in the city and four outside the city

Sources say facilities on the campus have been increased after PM’s intervention. University officials say they felt overwhelmed with PM’s interest and felt happy that the situation has improved after the visit of Adityanath.

Modi assured AMU that no stone will be left unturned to help the university. At the same time, the Chief Minister gave full support to the university and the Vice Chancellor took many important practical steps to deal with the situation.
