Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband, Lucknow, has condemned Saudi Arabia's reported decision to ban the Islamic missionary movement Tablighi Jamaat, and rejected labeling this organisation as a "gateway to terrorism." According to a report, Maulana Abul Qasim Nomani, the head of the Darul Uloom, has asked Saudi Arabia to reconsider its decision, as it is sending a wrong message to Muslims across the world.

This is the first time that Darul Uloom, Deoband has openly condemned the Saudi government.

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Religious Affairs recently called the Tablighi Jamaat a 'gateway to terrorism' and banned it.

Prominent Muslim activist Zafar Sareshwala said, “I am shocked by the decision of Saudi Arabia because Tablighi Jamaat has always been the antidote to the extremist ideas. The Jamaat rejected all modern jihadi movements. Even the Taliban has spoken against the Tablighi Jamaat many times.” He said that the description of Tablighi Jamaat by Saudi Arabia as a gateway to terrorism is unbelievable and unacceptable.

In a video message from the UK, Samiruddin Qasmi, spokesperson of Hazrat Nizamuddin Markaz's Tablighi Jamaat said, 'This is a big accusation against Tablighi Jamaat.  This organization has nothing to do with terrorism.

“Instead Tablighi Jamaat is an organization that has helped in the prevention of terrorism; it has also condemned terrorism and therefore openly rejected it.

"We do not allow anyone to speak against any religion, community, and country," he insisted. We talk only about the five pillars of Islam, none of our people have ever been found involved in any terrorist activities. "The Saudi government has been misled," he said.

Mohammad Mian, a member of a faction of Tablighi Jamaat, said, 'Our Jamaat is working all over the world. In Saudi Arabia also the members of the Jamaat are working to bring the Muslims to the right path, as taught by the Prophet. We will not comment on the decision of the Saudi government, but our Jamaat will continue to work in Saudi Arabia."

Maulana Fakhrul Hasan Khan, Senior Faculty, Darul Uloom Nadwa said, “So far we have received the news of the ban only through the media. We will contact our people in Saudi Arabia before reaching any conclusion.
