Director General of Police (DGP), Assam Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Sunday held a crucial meeting with representatives of various Islamic organizations and Muslim scholars to streamline the functioning of private madrassas in the State.

The meeting was held close on the heels of the Assam Government demolishing three private madrassas in different parts of the State on the ground that these institutions were allegedly involved in jihadi activities.

Addressing the media after the meeting the DGP said the meeting was held in a conducive atmosphere and several decisions were taken to regulate or streamline the functioning of private madrassas in the State. He said the representatives of Islamic organizations who run such madrassas have agreed to implement the decision.

“A portal will be launched soon to keep detailed information and records of private madrassas. The owners of madrassas will have to upload and update information about their institutions in the portal. Information like the background of teachers of madrassas, sources of salaries of teachers and other funds, total land areas will have to be uploaded in the portal,” Mahanta said.

According to the DGP, there are more than 1,000 private madrassas in the State. These madrassas are being run by different Islamic organizations such as Jamiat Ulema E-Hind. But a majority of madrassas are not registered. He said Sunday’s meeting has decided that the madrassas will register themselves with a single apex body like All Assam Tanzim Madaris Qawmiya or Tanzim board.

“There are instances of setting up madrassas at the drop of a hat. We have constituted a committee to come out with a set of rules and regulations to streamline the functioning of private madrassas. The committee will complete its task within the next six months. Many small and unrecognized madrassa will be merged or amalgamated with large madrassas,” Mahanta said.

The DGP said the Sunday’s meeting also decided that besides Islamic religious teachings the private madrassas will also impart modern education. The private madrassa representatives have agreed to introduce subjects like mathematics and science, he said.

“Going forward, we want to prepare a blueprint to streamline the functioning of all madrassas. Our objective – to prevent anti-India, jihadi elements from utilizing the madrasas for their nefarious fundamentalist purposes,” said DGP Mahanta.

Besides Mahanta other top Assam Police officials including Additional Director General (ADG), Special Branch, Hiren Chandra Nath was present in the meeting.
