The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday said that matters concerning the India–Bangladesh border are being addressed through established bilateral mechanisms, including ongoing Director General-level talks between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said issues such as alleged cross-border pushbacks are being discussed within the framework of the 57th Border Coordination Conference currently underway between the two forces.

He noted that the DG-level dialogue serves as the appropriate platform for both sides to exchange views and address operational concerns related to border management.

“We have the BSF and BGB DG-level meeting going on. This is a bilateral engagement to discuss relevant issues, and we will hopefully get an update on the meeting,” Jaiswal said during the weekly media briefing.

He added that both sides are actively engaging on border-related challenges through the ongoing discussions.

“These are issues which both sides are discussing and will be discussing during their conversation,” he said.

The four-day conference, which began on Monday and will continue until June 11 in New Delhi, is focusing on a range of issues including fence breaches, prevention of attacks on BSF personnel and civilians, trans-border crimes, and infiltration concerns.

Discussions are also expected on preventing entry of criminals, border infrastructure development, Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), and action against insurgent groups operating across the border.

The Indian delegation is led by BSF Director General Praveen Kumar, while the Bangladeshi side is headed by Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, Director General of BGB.

Officials said the annual DG-level meetings, institutionalised under bilateral arrangements dating back to 1975 and formalised as a bi-annual mechanism in 1993, continue to play a key role in resolving operational and security issues along the international border.
