New Delhi: A second case of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 has been reported in Delhi, the state government said Saturday.

The person who returned from Zimbabwe had been fully vaccinated. He tested positive for the variant in a genome sequencing report. The Delhi Government said the travel history of the patient revealed that the person had also travelled to South Africa.

The latest infection took India’s Omicron tally to 33.

The Omicron variant was first reported to the World Health Organisation (WHO) from South Africa on November 25. According to the WHO, the first known confirmed B.1.1.529 infection was from a specimen collected on November 9 this year.

On November 26, the WHO named the new Covid-19 variant B.1.1.529 as 'Omicron’.

Delhi recorded 41 fresh cases of coronavirus on Friday taking the total number of cases in the national capital to 14,41,610. According to the Delhi government’s data, the positivity rate is 0.07 per cent.
