Acclaimed filmmaker Anik Dutta died on Wednesday after reportedly falling from the terrace of his multi-storey home in south Kolkata, police officials said.
He was rushed to a private hospital near Dhakuria, where doctors declared him brought dead, a senior police officer said.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and examined the spot. No statement has yet been issued by the filmmaker’s family.
The news drew several members of the Bengali film fraternity to the hospital, including actors, directors and industry colleagues.
Dutta rose to prominence with the 2012 film ‘Bhooter Bhabishyat’, a horror satire widely praised for its sharp political and social commentary. The film is considered by many to be a landmark work in contemporary Bengali cinema.

He later directed films such as ‘Ascharya Pradip’, which also explored social themes, along with critically appreciated titles including ‘Aparajito’, ‘Meghnadbodh Rohoshyo’ and ‘Borunbabur Bondhu’.
