India and the European Union have reiterated their commitment to protect and promote all human rights.
In the India-EU Human Rights Dialogue held on Friday both sides exchanged views on civil and political rights, rights of minorities and freedom of religion among others.
Both concurred on the importance of safeguarding the freedom, independence and diversity of civil society actors, including human rights defenders and journalists.
The EU reiterated its opposition to capital punishment in all cases and without exception.
The two sides expressed the need to foster greater engagement on human rights issues, based on internationally recognised human rights laws and standards.

The Human Rights Dialogue was co-chaired by Joint Secretary, Europe (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Sandeep Chakravorty, and Ambassador of the European Union to India, Ugo Astuto.
