Kalita Majhi’s life began in a modest home in a small village in Ausgram, West Bengal. The woman who once supported her family by washing dishes, cleaning floors, and cooking in other people’s homes has today become the voice of the people in the Assembly.
Her remarkable journey from domestic worker to legislator symbolises the rise of an ordinary citizen in a vibrant democracy.
Kalita Majhi’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections has become the talk of the town. Coming from an underprivileged background, her success has inspired many across rural Bengal.
Born into a poor family in Ausgram in East Burdwan district, Kalita grew up amid severe financial hardships. Poverty forced her to abandon formal education at an early age. To support her family, she began working as a domestic help in local households while still very young.

According to local residents, Kalita was always known for standing beside people in times of distress. Whether it was helping a sick neighbour, assisting families facing difficulties in getting ration supplies, or supporting victims of domestic violence, she earned a reputation as someone who could be relied upon.
Over time, her involvement in social causes gradually drew her into public life and politics.
However, Kalita Majhi’s entry into politics was far from easy. Many questioned how a domestic worker could aspire to become a political leader, and she often faced sarcastic remarks and social ridicule. But Kalita ignored the criticism and continued her work with determination.
She managed household chores during the day and spent the rest of her time addressing people’s grievances and campaigning in the area.
Recognising her strong grassroots connect, the BJP nominated Kalita Majhi as its candidate from the Ausgram constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections. Her deep bond with ordinary people became her greatest strength. During her campaign, she did not make grand promises. Instead, she spoke openly about her struggles, her life experiences, and her commitment to stand by the people of the region.
When the election results were announced, residents thronged outside her modest home to celebrate. Many described her victory as not just a personal achievement, but a triumph for countless women from marginalised and backward sections of society.
Yet, victory did not change Kalita’s lifestyle. According to media reports, the very next day after becoming an MLA, she was seen cooking, washing clothes, and carrying on with her daily household routine. Her simplicity and humility won widespread admiration.
Kalita Majhi’s rise is not merely a political story; it is also a reflection of the social realities of rural Bengal, where many women continue to struggle against poverty, neglect, and social barriers. For them, Kalita has emerged as a symbol of hope — proof that dreams can survive even amid hardship and adversity.
Political observers believe her victory could send a powerful message across Bengal’s political landscape. Her success demonstrates that genuine relationships with people and years of grassroots social work can still outweigh money, influence, and political pedigree.

Today, the people of Ausgram proudly call her their MLA. Yet to them, she remains the same affectionate “Kalita Di” who would knock on their doors and ask, “What’s the matter?” Perhaps that, more than anything else, is the true secret of her success.
