When terrorists gunned down Supinder Kour, Principal of the Government Boys Higher secondary school, Sangam Eidgah, Srinagar on Thursday morning, not only her family lost a member, but her neighbour lost a 'sister' and a young Muslim girl her '"foster mother."

Speaking with the portal, The Real Kashmir, Showkat Ahmad Dar, the slain teacher's neighboour in Aloochibagh in Srinagar uptown, gave details of Supinder's supporting an orphan girl financially.

Besides her husband, Rasmesh Singh, a banker, Supinder Kour leaves behind a daughter Jasleen Kour, 11, and a son Jasjit Singh, 6. Dar said he was privy to Supinder Singh's nature of helping needy people.

Dar said once when Supinder Kour was posted in the government school Channapora, when he told her about a Muslim girl who had lost her both parents. She was being taken care of by her aunt, who would soon get married leaving the hapless child without anyone to take care of.

He said without losing a second, she offered to take care of the girl's expenses and immediately gave Rs 20,000 for her. "I told her that I just wanted her help in getting the girl to a safer place but she insisted that she would take care of her," Showkat Dar said.

“Initially, I refused to accept the offer and asked her to accommodate the child at someplace. But instead, Kour till date bore the expenses of the child,” he recollected as he broke down.

Dar said Supinder was such a goodhearted person that a few days ago when she came to know that he had been promoted as a Manager in the laboratory where he worked, she not only was visibly happy, she also distributed sweets among all the neighbours to celebrate his success.

Dar said her family shared such close bonds with the Singhs. He and Kour's husband went together for morning walks and “Whenever Kour and her husband bought something for their children from the market, they got the same thing for my son too.”

Kour's family said she was so excited to drive her car to her school for the first time least knowing that she was not going to return in it.

Sikh community members described Kour as a hardworking teacher who was known for instilling discipline among students.

Supinder was cremated amidst heavy security. Sikhs and Muslims participated in her cremation that reached Karan Nagar cremation ground amidst the chanting of slogans.
