‘Naveen's body to be brought back from Ukraine once shelling stops’

Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar informed the Karnataka government that the body of Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar who was killed in shelling in Ukraine’s Kharkiv earlier this month will be brought to India once shelling stops there, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Tuesday.

Bommai also said that the body is now in a mortuary in Ukraine. "External Affairs Minister Jaishankar has informed us that Naveen's body has been embalmed and kept in a mortuary in Ukraine. His body will be brought to India once shelling stops there," Bommai said.

Naveen Shekharappa was an MBBS student. He was killed on March 1 in Russian shelling when he went out to buy food.

Earlier on Saturday, the Chief Minister handed over a cheque of Rs 25 lakh Naveen’s family and promised a job for a family member. The deceased 21-year-old student, was a resident of Karnataka's Haveri district. He was studying in the Kharkiv National Medical University.

On Tuesday, Russia declared a ceasefire from 10 am (Moscow time) to provide humanitarian corridors in the cities of Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Mariupol, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia said in a statement.
