India and China have agreed to continue work on mutual security interests of both the nations during a high-level meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

During the meeting, which lasted for more than one hour Wang Yi and Doval held discussions on several issues and agreed that there was a need for a mature and sincere approach for resolving security related issues. The Chinese foreign minister also extended an invitation to the National Security Advisor to visit China.

Highly placed sources said during the meeting Doval also laid emphasis on the need to ensure that military actions do not violate the spirit of equal and mutual security and there was a need to resolve the outstanding issues as quickly as possible. 

Both the sides felt that there is a need to take forward early and complete disengagement in remaining areas and remove impediments to allow the bilateral relationship to take its natural course.

There was also a realization that the continuation of the present situation is not in the mutual interest of both the countries. Both sides agreed that the restoration of peace & tranquility will help build mutual trust and create an enabling environment for progress in the relations.

It is learnt Wang Yi and Doval were also on the same page for a need to continue positive interactions at diplomatic and military levels for restoration of peace and tranquility, which is a prerequisite for normalization of the relations between the two big powers in the region.

Wang Yi first met the National Security Advisor at the latter’s office in South Block, after which he and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held talks. He had arrived in New Delhi a day after his trip to Kabul.

This is the first visit by a high-level Chinese diplomat to India since the border dispute between the two nations erupted two years ago. Till date, fifteen rounds of military talks have taken place between the two countries to resolve the pending issues.

The Chinese side invited NSA to visit China, the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval responded positively to the invitation and is learnt to have said that he could visit after immediate issues are resolved successfully.
