The drug mafias are making human couriers swallow capsules filled with narcotics for trafficking the contraband. One such case was detected by the alert Customs Officers at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), New Delhi, recently wherein a Ugandan woman was found carrying 992 gm of Cocaine in her digestive tract.

Customs officers identified one Ugandan passenger, who arrived at Terminal-3, IGIA a few days back as they found her gait and body movements unusual. However, they approached her to offer help, in case she needed it.

According to an official handout, the passenger not only refused to accept any help but was also disinclined to engage in a conversation. However, she was showing signs of pain and uneasiness at the same time. Sensing her unusual behaviour, the Customs officers maintained a vigil on her. After a while, the passenger crossed the green channel and was approaching the exit gate, when the customs officers finally intercepted her. On questioning, the passenger admitted she had swallowed 91 capsules of narcotic substance.

Since it was an impending emergency, the passenger was admitted to the RML hospital. X-ray scanning revealed that her colon was filled with oval pellets.

Under expert medical supervision, the ejection procedure was carried out over several days. It yielded 91 pellets in batches. During these days, Customs staff maintained a round-the-clock vigil at the hospital.

These 91 pellets in turn yielded 992 grams of white powdery substance that turned out to be Cocaine.

The said passenger has been arrested under the NDPS Act, 1985 on Wednesday after she was discharged from hospital.
This is the second big detection of Cocaine at IGI Airport this month. Earlier 2838 gm of Cocaine was recovered from a Nigerian passenger on December 9. He had arrived at New Delhi from Lagos via Dubai.

In a year the airport customs have intercepted the 24th consignment of narcotics and arrested 32 persons.

The estimated value of drug seizures is more than Rs. 845 crores, the officials said.
