The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), a statutory body of the central government, has issued notices to all states and union territories on a petition of the global NGO for animal welfare People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), India, to stop the cruel treatment of animals during Eid-ul-Adha.

In its recommendation, the board said that during Eid, several violations of the Transport Animal Rules, 1978 have been happening in the past. The number of animals that can be carried in a vehicle is often violated and needs to be checked.

The notice also mentions the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001, which says that no person should slaughter an animal inside a municipal area, except as authorized, sanctioned, or approved by law.

It also states that camels should not be sacrificed under the rules of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Farhat Ul Ain, PETA India Advocacy Associate said, "All religions encourage compassion, and it is everyone's civil obligation to follow animal protection laws. PETA India appeals that Eid should be celebrated with animals in mind."

He said: "like me, many Muslim followers of PETA India celebrate Eid without sacrificing an animal and instead donating cash, clothes, vegetarian food, or other items.

PETA India has appealed to the Minister of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Parshottam Rupala for the deletion of Section 28 of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. As per this clause killing an animal as per the prescribed rules of religion doesn't constitute cruelty.
