In the Walled city of Hyderabad, 'Lukma Kitchen' has created opportunities for women to hone and their skills in cooking and hobbies to make a living.
It is an initiative of an NGO SAFA Society that creates opportunities for social and economic empowerment of women across Telangana.
Lukma Kitchen is an expert team of chefs who prepare delicious dishes. These women prepare the famous Hyderabadi cuisine in a hygienic and standardized environment. The indoor food delivery facility is available to customers in Greater Hyderabad. One can order food from Lukma Kitchen through its website, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and phone.
The order has to be placed at least 24 or 48 hours before the delivery. Currently, Lukma Kitchen employs 15 women; it takes care of the sensitivity of each employee. The SAFA Society pays a commission to the chef on each order.
The common thing about all 15 women at Lukma is that they are single parents – some have lost their husbands, others are divorcees or separated from husband.
Razia, one of the beneficiaries of Lukma Kitchen in Hyderabad's Vita Pali area, said after her husband’s death three years ago, she faced financial difficulties for a few months. She then joined the kitchen through the SAFA Society and received training as a professional chef.
Expressing happiness she said that SAFA Society imparted her professional training in cooking and now she is earning a fixed income of Rs.8,000 per month.
The chefs at Lukma Kitchen are all smiles
Another talented chef Asiya Sultana said that she learned to make 'Chicken Biryani’ and also famous Hyderabadi dishes like 'Lukma Chicken', 'Chicken Cutlet', 'Puran Puri'. She earns Rs 5,000 to Rs 12,000, the variation in income is linked to the number of orders the kitchen gets.
Farisa Khan, Vice President of Safa Society, said that through Lukma Kitchen, he is trying to make single parents of Hyderabad self-reliant. He said that Lukma Kitchen is currently capable of fulfilling 1,000 orders daily.
He says in case the Lukma kitchen gets more orders for food delivery, it can provide livelihood to more women.
Rubina Nafees Fatima, President of Safa Society, has pledged to make common women food professionals and self-reliant through Lukma Kitchen. She said that Lukma is also providing healthy homemade food to the patients. According to the society, they have provided food for the quarantine centers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Farisha told that you can also like the traditional dishes of Hyderabad like Khatti Dal, Baghare Baingan, Tava Keema, Dalcha, Pickled Chicken, Talhwa Meat, Kaboli, Dasti Roti, Mirch Salan, Shami Kebab, Chicken Cutlet, Kobani Sweet, Double Ka Huh. Sweets and other types of food can also be ordered at Lukma Kitchen.
Syed Younis, Social Enterprise Manager, SAFA Society, said that Lukma is getting more orders from the new city of Hyderabad in comparison with the old city. Responding to a query, he said that Lukma Kitchen has partnered with Dvoove (Moving Women) Social Initiative Foundation for food delivery, which enables the delivery of women executives.
