Breaking myths about Muslim women, a study has shown they enjoy more financial freedom than the women in other religious communities in India.

The study done by Prof Ramphool Auhlyan of Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak says Muslim women in India have more control over their personal money and a greater say in the financial decisions of their families in comparison to the women of other religions.

The survey throws up interesting and surprising facts about Muslim women and breaks the sterotypes. It shows that Muslim women have economic freedom in their homes; they are consulted in every small and big financial decision of the family.

According to it, 70.3 percent of Muslim women have a say in the financial decisions of the family.

Also, 26.3 percent of Muslim women spend their money on their free will.

In comparison, in a of Hindu family, only 20.1 percent women spend their income without being questioned by members of their family.

Among the religious minorities only 22.4 percent Christian women, 19 per cent in Sikh women and 24.5 percent Buddhist women enjoy this freedom.

Also, among the Muslims, 55.8 percent couples spend money jointly.

Here Muslims lag behind others: the survey says that while Muslim couples spending together are around 55.8 percent, among the Hindus this figure stands at 61.6 percent.

Also, for Christians this figure is 63.8 per cent; for Sikh it’s 68.4 and the among the Buddhist it’s 64.1 per cent.

He said Muslim society has been undergoing a huge change for several years and this has impacted the status of women.
