India can use the Chittagong seaport for the North-Eastern states including Assam and Tripura for strengthening the connectivity between the two neighbouring countries.

This offer was made by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when the visiting Indian Minister for External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar met her during his two day visit to the country.

"It needs to enhance the connectivity between the two countries. If the connectivity is increased, the Indian North-Eastern states like Assam and Tripura can have access to the Chittagong seaport," she said on Thursday.

Ihsanul Karim, press secretary to the prime minister, briefed reporters after the meeting.

He said Sheikh Hasina said an initiative has already been taken to reopen the cross-border routes which had been shut between the two countries in 1965.

During the meeting, both of them expressed happiness at the state of the existing bilateral relations between the two countries, Karim told media as he was briefing them in Dhaka.
