The Taliban resorted to Shariah law in by carrying out the first public execution of a man convicted of murder and theft in Farah, the capital town of the Western region, on Wednesday. The Taliban made a show of the execution through public acknowledgment.

What is more shocking is that the execution was carried out by the father of the victim who was shot dead by Tajmir, a resident of Heart province.

Though the Taliban has taken control of Afghanistan a year and a half ago, it was last month that its elusive supreme leader Hibatullah khundzadai ordered strict implementation of the Shariah law including public executions, stoning and flogging, and the amputation of limbs for theft.

According to Pakistan’s Dawn Newspaper, the Taliban have carried out many public floggings, the execution in Farah in the Western part of Afghanistan is the first ordered by the judiciary and acknowledged by the regime in Kabul.

“The supreme court was instructed to implement this order of qisas in a public gathering of compatriots,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement, referring to the “eye for an eye” justice in Sharia.

The statement identified the convict as Tajmir, a resident of Anjil district in Herat province.

It said that Tajmir had murdered a man and stolen his motorcycle and cell phone.

“Later, this person was recognized by the heirs of the deceased,” it said, adding he had admitted his guilt.

The spokesman later clarified in a tweet that the execution was carried out by the father of the victim, who shot the man three times.

Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid issued a release on this on Twitter:

Afghans are already facing tough times with no international aid and a strict regime that has placed curbs on women. The women are being pittance as an allowance to stay home.
