US President Donald Trump has announced that South Africa will not be invited to the 2026 G20 Summit, which the United States is scheduled to host during its presidency. The statement came along with criticism of South Africa’s stance on alleged human rights violations against white settlers.

The G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Johannesburg last weekend was attended by several heads of state, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The United States did not participate in the summit and did not send an official delegation.
Trump claimed that South Africa declined to transfer the ceremonial G20 presidency to the American representative who attended the closing event. He said that the decision to exclude South Africa from the next summit was made under his direction and that the 2026 G20 would take place in Miami, Florida.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa described the announcement as unfortunate and said his government had consistently sought to maintain a constructive relationship with Washington. The South African Presidency also responded to reports on the G20 gavel handover, clarifying that the instruments of the G20 presidency were formally handed to a US Embassy official at the headquarters of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation since the United States had not been present at the Johannesburg summit.
