Dadasaheb Phalke was born on 30 April 1870 in a Marathi Brahmin family in Trimbakeshwar, Nashik.
His original name was Dhundiraj Govind Phalke. He had a dedication towards art since childhood.
At the age of 15, he took admission in the then famous J.J School of Arts in Mumbai.
After the first silent film 'Raja Harishchandra', Dadasaheb made two more mythological films 'Bhasmasur Mohini' and 'Savitri'.
Dadasaheb Phalke had last expressed his desire to make a film in the year 1944, at that time there was British rule and filmmakers had to take a license to make a film.
In January 1944, Dadasaheb wrote a letter to the British government for a license, on 14 February 1944 the reply came that you cannot get permission to make a film.
It is said that he was so shocked that day that he died within two days.
On his 25th death anniversary i.e. in the year 1969, Phalke Award was started in his name. This is the most prestigious award of Indian cinema which is given to those celebrities who make significant contribution to the cinema world.
But, even today the Hindi cinema world takes the name of Dadasaheb Phalke with full respect and his name is written in golden letters on the sky of Indian cinema.
