Dr. Batool Hameed, Principal, Viva College of Law, Virar, Maharashtra, has resigned from her post for being harassed for wearing the hijab inside the campus. In her resignation letter, she said that for some days she had been feeling uneasy because of the environment around her. She had joined the college in July 2019.

Dr. Batool Hameed says she faced no problems during her two years in college. However, after the controversy over the hijab started in Karnataka, she felt she was being targeted by the people in the college administration.

Batool Hameed belongs to the Dawoodi Bohra community. She said one day some people of Dawoodi Bohra met her in the school to enquire about the admission of their children. That incident raised suspicion and some people in the administration accused her of preaching religion on the campus.

She asked why people of other faiths wearing Tilak and even arranging Saraswati Vandana on campus should not be considered as religious activities?

She alleged that over some time she had been getting a feeling that the management committee would dismiss her for some reason. Therefore, she resigned. She said, "I have resigned to save my honor and culture."

She said that her work was always appreciated by the management committee, students, and other members of the college. It may be recalled that Batool Hameed had played a key role in the college launching a three-year LLB course
