Prof Najma Akhtar of JMI conferred honorary Colonel status

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) has conferred the rank of Honorary Colonel on Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia.

The Ministry of Defense has issued a notification regarding this. “On 12 April, the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. Najma Akhtar will be appointed as 'Colonel Commandant'. Soon a function will be organized and this responsibility will be handed over to her.

A wave of happiness spread across the campus of Jamia Milia Islamia University and the fraternity after the news about the notification was issued by the Government of India. 

During Najma Akhtar’s tenure, JMI University started NCC as a Choice Base Credit System (CBCS) course at the graduation level from the session 2022-23.

The Jamia has now become the first university to offer NCC as a credit course at the undergraduate level in each of the six semesters.

According to the information, “This course has made NCC more popular among the students of Jamia. Semester graduate students from various faculties are joining NCC specifically to study this course.

It may be noticed that Prof. Najma Akhtar has been a member of the National High-Level Expert Committee for a comprehensive review of the NCC constituted by the Ministry of Defense in 2021 to further improve the participation of college and University students in the NCC.
