Netflix Content Head summoned by I&B Ministry over 'IC814' web series content row

New Delhi

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned the Netflix Content Head over the IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack web series content row.

In the series, the terrorists involved in the hijacking of the Indian Airlines plane were given Hindu names like Bhola, Shankar, Chief, Doctor, and Burger while they were Muslims from Pakistan in the real hijacking that the film is based on.

The hijacking was carried out by Ibrahim Athar, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Ibrahim, Shahid Akhter, and Sayed Shakir.

There is an outrage against the series director Anubhav Sinha on social media with his name trending and people asking the authorities to take action against him.

#Boycott Bollywood is also trending with netizens asking people to boycott the series.

The film features Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, and Dia Mirza, and its story is based on the Pakistani terrorists hijacking the India Airlines airbus which was flying from Kathmandu to Delhi on 24 December 1999, hijacked it and was flown to several locations before landing in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

India had to release four terrorists including Maulana Azhar Masood, who heads the Jaish-e-Muhammad, a Un proscribed terrorist organization in Pakistan, Ahmed Omer, who later abducted and beheaded American journalist Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, Saeed Sheikh, and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar to secure the release of the 168 passengers and the crew of the hijacked plane.
