Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Harini Amarsooriya, on a visit to India, appealed to youth and the general public on Thursday to build bridges rather than walls—between homes, workplaces, and nations. She described this idea as a symbol of brotherhood, cooperation, and positive dialogue.

Referring to the assistance provided by India to Sri Lanka during its economic crisis, Amarsooriya said, "This support was an extended hand of a true friend during our most difficult times."

Addressing students at Hindu College, New Delhi, the Prime Minister said that India and Sri Lanka are not just neighboring countries but share deep cultural and civilizational ties. She described India as a reliable and enduring partner in Sri Lanka’s development journey.

For Amarsooriya, who completed her undergraduate studies in Sociology at Hindu College, Delhi University, from 1991 to 1994, this visit was deeply emotional. She shared memories of her student life and stated that her education had shaped her perspective.

This is her first official visit to India as Prime Minister, which will continue from 16th to 18th October. There was tremendous excitement across the college campus for her arrival. Students and faculty members welcomed her warmly, with posters and banners displayed throughout the premises. As she stepped out of the car, she waved to students standing on the main building’s balcony.

The ceremony was held in the Sanganeeria Auditorium, but before participating, she interacted with professors from the Sociology Department, some students, and members of the college parliament.

Addressing the students, Amarsooriya said, "Do not be afraid to ask difficult questions; challenge the limits of your thinking." She emphasized that intelligence must be paired with compassion, as education is incomplete without empathy. Finally, highlighting the importance of democracy, she urged students to protect democratic values and stand up for them.
