The wedding of Shafqat Aamna and Syed Gauhar Hassan, Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, has become the talk of the town in Motihari, Bihar, for its simplicity.

Shafqat Amna and Gauhar Hasan went through their Nikah ceremony in the Jama masjid in the presence of their families. There was no long list of guests, lavish parties or gifts from the bride to the groom’s family.

The simple Nikah ceremony was as per the tents of Islam. Ideally, Muslims should get married in a mosque in the presence of a Moulvi and five family members. Ostentatious celebrations are forbidden.

However, this rule is observed more in the breach as the Indian fat wedding has become the norm for the middle class from across religions.

Gauhar, 2020 batch IPS officer, is posted in Jalna district of Maharashtra. Amna who has completed her training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Indian Academy of Administration, LBSNAA, has also been allotted Maharashtra cadre. She is likely to get her posting by February end.

People of Motihari are appreciating the simple wedding by two young achievers. Aamna, daughter of a school teacher Zafir Alam is from Muthia moholla while Gauhar hails from Mishkout Mohalla. On the occasion, the chief cleric (Imam) of Jama Masjid asked others to emulate Gauhar and Amna, who got married as per the Shari'a. He said people should follow the tenet of the simple wedding as enshrined in Islam.

Ujair Anjum, a local Urdu journalist says the people are discussing this wedding because it’s unusual for people in high positions and achievers to get married without a fanfare.
