Cop killed in Ludhiana bomb blast was dismissed 2 years ago, says Punjab DGP

The policeman who was killed and is a suspect in the bomb blast in the Ludhiana district court on Thursday carried the explosives to the court and had been dismissed from service two years ago, Punjab’s Director General of Police Siddharth Chattopadhyaya said on Saturday.

"The deceased person, former policeman Gagandeep Singh was carrying the explosives. He was dismissed from service in 2019 and spent two years in jail following his arrest in a drug-trafficking case," DGP Chattopadhyaya said at a press conference.

Two other persons were injured in the explosion at the court complex.

The police said Gagandeep Singh was scheduled to appear in court in the drugs case filed against him and had planned to destroy the court records room where case papers were stored.

Gagandeep, who was a former head constable was killed when the bomb he was assembling in a bathroom in the court when it went off, Chattopadhyaya.

Investigators are still trying to find out how the former cop sourced the material to make the improvised explosive device or IED.
