As the work from home schedule during the Covid pandemic saw many women unable to cope with the dual responsibilities of running the home and hearth and also doing their office and finally quitting in desperation, one woman decided to bring them back into the workforce.

Sphoorthi, leader of a Bangalore based NGO, Leraningorg that is run by Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg, took the initiative of bringing them back into the workforce.

Sphoorti’s work has been praised by none other than Sheryl Sandberg, who took to Instagram to share her inspiring story.

Sphoorti did a unique experiment of contacting the family members of the women who had tendered their resignation in her office and speaking with them. She put them in touch with the families where all members shared the chores and didn’t burden the lady of the house with dual responsibilities of office and domestic work.

Sheryl Sandberg praised the social experiment of Sphoorti and shared it on Instagram:

One unforgettable story came from Sphoorti, a Network Leader with Lean In Bangalore. Many women in her community resigned during COVID-19 because they were unable to juggle the demands of a career, housework and caring for children and in-laws. Sphoorti led an initiative to bring these women back to work. She reached out to their husbands and family members to explain the importance of stepping up at home, and connected them to families who were modeling ways of sharing work equitably. Thanks to her efforts, almost all of the women who left their workplaces are now working full time. She told us, “During the pandemic, I have started using community and ideas in different ways to make sure that women stay in the workforce.”

Thank you, Sphoorti, for demonstrating how to show up for our communities in times like these.”

Leaders like Sphoorti are the need of the nation in these dire times.
