Former Congress MP from Patiala, Preneet Kaur, joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on March 14. 
 
Having contested five Lok Sabha elections representing the Congress in Patiala since 1999, Preneet emerged victorious in four, except in 2014. She has previously served as the Minister of State for External Affairs in the UPA-2 government.
 
A prominent figure in her constituency, she enjoys strong social connections owing to her accessibility and rapport with grassroots workers.
 
Preneet is the wife of former Congress leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who has joined the BJP and is actively involved in facilitating a potential alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)
 
Preneet, who was suspended by the Congress  for allegedly speaking against the party, had been openly showing her support for the BJP in her constitutional area.
 
After joiniing the BJP, Preneer Kaur tweeted that she is grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President J.P. Nadda for inducting her into the party.'

 
She also tweeted pictures of her meeting with the BJP National President. She tweeted, "I have worked selflessly my whole life for the people of Punjab and the country & will continue to do so.''
