Jammu and Kashmir police have released videos of the last rites and burial of the separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani to rebut propaganda by Pakistan and some Kashmiri leaders about no proper funeral being given to the dead leader.

Kashmir police, however, admitted his sons Dr Nayeem and Dr Naseem, developed cold feet at the last minute and refused to come to the graveyard for burial,

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said, the family was very cooperative when he and other officers visited them at 11 pm after Geelani’s death.

Police said after the death of SAS Geelani, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir zone, Vijay Kumar along with SP and ASP met both his sons at their residence at 11pm and requested for burial in the night for larger interest of general public due to potential major law and order situations.

Police claimed both Dr Nayeem and Naseem agreed with police and asked to wait for two hours until relatives reach.

Vijay Kumar spoke to a few relatives and ensured them of safe passage. “However, three hours later probably under the pressure from Pakistan and miscreants they behaved differently and started resorting to anti-national activities including wrapping the body in Pakistani flag, raising pro-Pakistan slogans and instigating neighbours to come out.

After persuasion the relatives brought the dead body to the graveyard and performed last rites with due respect in presence of members of Mosque management Committee and local Imam.

Video of gusul (ablution) released by Police:

However, both his sons refused to come to the graveyard and Police said it ‘indicated their loyalty to Pakistani agenda rather than their love and respect for their departed father.”

Pakistan had alleged that Police had snatched the body of Geelani from his family and buried it quietly.

On the other hand, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti had alleged that Geelani was not given a proper funeral.

It may be recalled that both sons of Geelani had distanced from their father’s politics so far. One of his sons Dr Nayeem had practiced medicine and also lived in Pakistan for many years.

On his return, he was helped by many eminent persons in Delhi to get a job in top hospital in Delhi.

The Geelani family has been served a notice of eviction from their Hyderpora house by the police. The house is registered in the name of Jamat-e-Islami, a proscribed organization, It’s not clear if the notice is served for the place being used for anti-national activities or just for being property of JeI.
