By launching the 5G services in the country, PM Modi has put the country’s technological advancement on a fast track. Once it penetrates our lives, we can be assured of seamless network coverage and a highly reliable communication system.

The 5G services will introduce Augmented reality and Virtual Intelligence into our daily lives. It will allow us to handle data effectively, making access faster.

What is 5G Spectrum?

It is the 5th generation in cellular networks in continuation of the 1G,2G,3G and 4g spectrums. The 1G spectrum was launched in the early 1990s. The 5G is more advanced than the 3G and 4G networks as it adds more speed, making connectivity faster. It provides 20 times more speed than 4G.

It works fastest over Wi-Fi. For those of us using this at home, it will make data downloads faster, reduce latency and connect over longer ranges. As an example, you will be able to download a 2-hour movie in less than 2 minutes.

Since 5G has the potential to connect virtually everyone including machines, objects and devise. Therefore, 5G holds the key to transform health, education and agriculture sectors.

The 5G network will help us realize the full potential of a connected world.

It works on higher frequencies than 4G and relies on a dense infrastructure of shoe-box sized towers at a distance of a few hundred meters. This allows it to support billions of devices without affecting their performance.

Use of 5G in Medicine

Once 5G sets in your visit to the doctor could become a rarity. Wearable or implanted medical devices will capture your vitals using 5G technology and convey them to your doctor. You will have access to personalized anytime, anywhere medicine.

The speed at which 5G works will also allow doctors perform surgeries remotely by controlling equipment hundreds of miles away.

Use of 5G in Education

5G has the potential to make education interactive and interesting.

Teachers will now be able to impart classes using Virtual and Augmented Reality tools. This will help students understand concepts better.

How can 5G transform our cities?

5G will play a key role in transforming our cities into smart cities. Sensors connected to a centralized system will help manage traffic, street lighting, air quality among many other things. As an example, San Diego in the USA installed smart street lighting system using 5G technology that automatically dim the lights when no one is around, thereby saving close to USD 2 million a year.

Similarly, it can be used to effectively track air-quality and traffic systems.

5G’s role in Industries

5G will have a huge impact in industrial and commercial activities.

It will allow smartly track inventories and logistics.

5G and agriculture

5G technology will be used in drone cameras to identify crop diseases, track use of pesticides.

Driverless cars

According to research nearly 95 per cent of traffic accidents are caused due to human error.

This makes the argument in favour of driverless cars very strong. But for us to reach that stage, we need to make driverless cars fully autonomous.

Cars will need to communicate with cars around them, traffic lights and road signs. This is where low-latency 5G network comes in.
