The Karnataka High Court has ordered that the ban on wearing hijab or any other religious symbol by students in an educational institution will continue till the disposal of the petitions challenging a ban on the use of headscarves by Muslim women students.

The verbal order of the court was given by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi to the petitioners and the State during the hearing of a bunch of petitions filed by women students by a 3-judge bench.

The petitions were referred to the full bench in the first hearing. Thereafter Chief Justice nominated herself, Justice Krishna S Dixit, and Justice JM Khazi for hearing. Justice Krishna S Dixit had pointed out that the issues raised by the petitioners give rise to certain constitutional questions of seminal importance about personal law and hence should be decided by a larger bench.

Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi said the court will order reopening of the colleges but no student should insist on wearing a religious dress when the matter is pending.

The hearing in the case will continue on Monday at 2.30 PM

The Court said it will pass an order for reopening of the institutions however, no students will insist on wearing religious dress till the final hearing in the case.
