On the occasion of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other Union ministers paid tribute to the millions who endured the pain, displacement, and violence of the Partition of India in 1947.

Calling Partition a “tragic” and “painful” chapter of Indian history, PM Modi remembered the “upheaval and pain” faced by countless people, lauding their grit and resilience in rebuilding their lives. “This day is also a reminder of our enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold our country together,” he said in a post on X.

Rajnath Singh honoured those who suffered the “horrific consequences of hatred and violence,” stressing the government’s commitment to furthering social harmony. Amit Shah condemned the division of the nation, stating that “the country will never forget the history and pain of the partition,” and offering heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal reflected on the loss, displacement, and suffering of 1947, emphasising the importance of keeping the memory alive for future generations. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the “far-reaching human and strategic consequences” of the event and the resilience of its survivors.

BJP President and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda called the Partition a “dark day” that caused “merciless pain of migration” and urged citizens to unite in preserving the nation’s integrity and giving a “befitting reply to anti-national forces.”

Observed annually on August 14, Partition Horrors Remembrance Day honours the memory of those who lost their lives and were displaced during one of the largest migrations in human history, which affected nearly 20 million people. While India celebrates the joy of independence every August 15, the nation also remembers the trauma of Partition and salutes those who made the ultimate sacrifice in that turbulent time.
