Nationalist Congress Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was elected the new Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Monday.
State President and the NCP Legislative Party leader Jayant Patil proposed the name of Ajit Pawar in the assembly.
62-year-old Pawar will now lead the combined Opposition Congress, Shiv Sena and other parties against the new Chief Minister Eknath Shinde supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the government.
Nephew of NCP stalwart Sharad Pawar, he has been a one-term Member of Parliament from Baramati and seven-time MLA. Ajit Pawar was also Deputy Chief Minister of the state four times.

He was also the Deputy CM in the outgoing Maha Vikas Aghadi government of Uddhav Thackeray.
