New Delhi
Mamata Banerjee is all set to take over as chief minister of West Bengal for the third consecutive term as her party Trinamool Congress has already scored a clear majority and beyond in the Assembly election the final results for which are yet to be declared by the Election Commission of India.
However, this stupendous victory was jarred by Mamata losing her election to her former party man Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram. Adhikari, who had joined BJP in December, turned to be a giant killer as he managed to defeat the incumbent Chief Minister by a margin of 1736 votes.
As per the Election Commission on its website at 12:15 am on May 3, the Trinamool Congress was declared the winner in 201 out of the 292 seats contested, and was ahead in 12 other constituencies. The party has moved beyond the halfway mark of 184 seats to be a winner.
Its cumulative tally had surged to 213.
Suvendu Adhikari, the giant killer
The Bharatiya Janata Party was declared the winner in 72 seats and was ahead in five other assembly segments.
BJP has clearly made deep inroads in West Bengal where it had won three seats in the 2016 elections. The State along with Kerala is considered to be the toughest for India’s ruling party to make a breakthrough.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Mamata Banerjee for being elected as Chief Minister of West Bengal and assured the State of all support from the centre. He took to Twitter to congratulate Banerjee.
Congratulations to Mamata Didi for @AITCofficial's win in West Bengal. The Centre will continue to extend all possible support to the West Bengal Government to fulfil people’s aspirations and also to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic. @MamataOfficial

Adhikari is a sitting MLA from Nandigram; he had been elected on Trinamool ticket in the 2016 elections.
Banerjee has threatened to challenge the Nandigram election in the court. However, she gave up her wheelchair on which she had campaigned for the elections.
Interestingly, the Samyukta Alliance comprising Congress, Left parties and ISF failed to open its account in the elections.
