A sessions court in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh sent Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair to judicial custody for 14 days on Monday.

Zubair is currently lodged in Sitapur jail. He appeared before the Sessions court via video conference.

A warrant was issued against him in Lakhimpur Kheri's Mohammadi, in a case registered against him in September 2021, after a complaint was filed by a Sudarshan News employee for a fact check tweet.

The Supreme Court last week granted him interim bail in a plea challenging the Allahabad High Court order refusing to quash the FIR registered against him for a tweet in which he allegedly called three Hindu religious leaders "hate mongers".

The interim bail to Zubair was granted for 5 days on the condition that he will not post any fresh tweets on the issue related to the case and not leave the jurisdiction of the Sitapur Magistrate's court.

He, however, could not walk out of jail as he continues to be in judicial custody in a separate case filed in Delhi over a tweet of 2018.
