Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Jagdeep Dhankar on being elected as Vice President of India.

In a series of tweets late on Saturday evening, the Prime Minister said, "Congratulations to Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji on being elected India’s Vice President with resounding support across party lines. I am confident he will be an outstanding Vice President. Our nation will gain tremendously from his intellect and wisdom. @jdhankhar1"
He said, "I thank all those MPs who have voted for Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji. At a time when India marks Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, we are proud to be having a Kisan Putra Vice President who has excellent legal knowledge and intellectual prowess. @jdhankhar1".
 
Dhankar who is the former West Bengal Governor and NDA candidate, swept the vote bank to become the 14th vice president of India.Dhankar defeated Opposition candidate, Margaret Alva by 346 votes. A lawyer by profession, Dhankar was born on May 18, 1951 in an agrarian household in a remote village in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district. He joined politics in 1989 and was alected to Lok Sabha from Jhunjhunu the same year. He served as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Janata Dal government led by Chandra Shekhar.
 
Dhankar will take the oath of office on August 11.
