Indian consulate in Kandhar not closed; Staff evaccuted

India have moved out about 50 diplomatic and security personnel from the Indian Consulate in Kandahar as the situation seems to be worseing in the country due to Taliban closing in on the Southern Afhan city. 

In Delhi MEA Spokesperson Arindam Baghchi tole media persons the evacuation of the Indian staff was a temporary situation and the step was taken as a safety measure for the Indian staff.

Baghchi said, "India is closely monitoring the evolving security situation in Afghanistan. The safety and security of our personnel is paramount."
 
He further said "The Consulate General of India in Kandahar has not been closed. However, due to the intense fighting near Kandahar city, India based personnel have been brought back for the time being."
 
"I want to emphasize that this is a purely temporary measure until the situation stabilizes. The Consulate continues to operate through our local staff members." were his further remarks.
 
He made sure that the arrangements were made to ensure continued delivery of visa and consular services through their Embassy in Kabul through the local employees.
 
The Indians including a group of the ITBP personnel were airlifted in a special Indian Air Force plane on Saturday.
"As an important partner of Afghanistan, India remains committed to a peaceful, sovereign and democratic Afghanistan." were his closing remarks.
