One of the many hallmarks of the month of Ramazan is the increased recitation and study of the Holy Qur’an. Many strive to complete at least one full reading of the Holy Qur’an during this month. The significance of the Holy Qur’an, especially about Ramazan has been highlighted by God when He states: ‘The month of Ramazan is that in which the Qur’an was sent down as a guidance for mankind with clear proofs and guidance and discrimination.’ (2:186)

One of the stand-out features of the month of Ramazan is that the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed during this time. This book of guidance is an invaluable treasure trove of information on how to live life as a good Muslim to this day.

"Allah has made Laylat al-Qadr in this month, which is better than a thousand months, as Allah says...The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees, there is peace until the appearance of dawn." -- Al-Qadar 97:1-5

Lailat-ul-Qadr is the prized jewel of Ramazan. This night carries more blessings than a thousand months. Muslims spend this night in prayer and meditation; to make dua and to seek forgiveness for past sins. There is salvation on this night; a chance to be cleansed of all sins and reborn again.

The blessed night is the Night of Power, and it was reported that the revelation of the Qur’an on that night was not astrologer; That is, separated, but it was a single sentence, as Allah sent it down from AlouhAlmahfouz, then it was revealed to the House of Glory in the lowest heaven, then it was revealed by Gabriel in parting to the Messenger of Allah.

The Quran is the speech of Allah transmitted to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by the Angel Gabriel in its exact meaning and wording, thereafter transmitted by numerous persons both verbally and in writing. This final revelation from Allah to mankind is inimitable, protected, and preserved by Allah Himself as promised in the following verse:

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.” [15:9]

Another reason why this night is so important is that on Laylat-al-qadr the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by Angel Gabriel.

“By the clear Book, Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].” [44:2-3]

The Quran is referred to as having been revealed in its entirety in the month of Ramazan on the Night of Power. However, it is also said to have been continuously revealed in portions during the lifetime of the Prophet. Many scholars agree that the process of revelation occurred in distinct phases involving the Descent of the Qur’an into the heavens and then its Revelation to the Messenger.

Prophet Muhammad was 40 years old when he received his first revelation of the Qur’an. This phase of the revelation of the Qur’an took place while on one of his frequent spiritual retreats in the Cave of Hira. This cave is located on Jabal an-Noor or the Mountain of Light on the outskirts of Makkah. It is described as being quite small, with enough space for only one person in such a manner that one is forced to face the Kaaba.

In summary, the Quran as we know it existed for eternity and was written in the Protected Tablet. During the month of Ramazan on the Night of Decree, the Qur’an was first revealed, descending to the lower heavens. From there, the angel of revelation, Gabriel, after hearing the Qur’an from Allah, revealed it piecemeal during the Prophet Muhammad’s lifetime of over 23 years.
