India took a one-nil lead in the three-match ODI series against the West Indies winning the first match at Port of Spain by three runs.
Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna managed to defend 38 runs off the last three overs weathering a late onslaught from Hosein and Shepherd.
Chasing 309 for a record win – the highest chase at the ground – the home team managed to score 305 for the loss of six wickets to hand the Shikhar Dhawan led visitors their 9th ODI win at this venue.
Put into bat first Dhawan and Shubham Gill gave a India a solid start with a 119 runs opening partnership.
Gill was the first to be out for 64 off 53 balls. Dhawan smashed 97 in 99 balls which included 10 fours and three sixes.
After Gill’s departure Shreyas Iyer joined Dhawan to take India across the 200 run mark in just 32 overs.
India eventually finished the innings at 308 for the loss of seven wickets.
In reply the hosts lost an early wicket when Shai Hope was dismissed for just 7 runs with the team total at 16.
Despite some solid knocks from Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks and Brandon King, the hosts fell just short of the target and missed a historic opportunity to record a sensational chase.
Mayers was the top-scorer for the West Indies with 75 runs.
For India, Mohammed Siraj, Chahal and Shardul Thakur each took two wickets apiece.
