New Zealand pulled off a great escape in the first test in Kanpur today when bad light stoppped play in the last session of the fifth and final day when the visitors were staring at defeat.

New Zealand ended the day at 165 for 9 with 119 runs left for an unlikely victory target of 284 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin took 7 wickets between them as NZ crumbled in the last innings.

It would have been India's second victory in a test match under the stand in captain Ajinkaya Rahane.

The second test begins in Mumbai from December 3.

Virat Kohli will return to lead the side in the second test.

Brief scores:

India- 345 & 234/7 declared.

New Zealand- 296 & 165/9
