Hosts South Africa were 35 for 1 at stumps in their first innings on the first day of the second Test match against India at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Monday after bowling out the visitors for a paltry 202.

K L Rahul, standing in as captain in place of Virat Kohli, won the toss and elected to bat. Rahul and his partner Mayank Agarwal got off to a good start but failed to capitalize with Agarwal (26) being the first to fall with the score at 36.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane did not last long while Hanuma Vihari and Rishab Pant failed to convert their starts into good scores. Rahul ended up as India’s highest scorer with 50 while Ashwin Ravichandran led a rearguard assault with 46. India eventually folded up at 202 in 63.1  overs.

South Africa batted sedately in the post tea session but lost Aiden Markram who was trapped leg before wicket by Mohammad Shami for 7.  The South African score was then 14. They managed to survive the rest of the session to reach a score of 35 runs in 18 overs, still 167 runs adrift of India’s first innings total.

India lead the three-match Test series 1-0 having won the first Test by 113 runs in Centurion.
