Dean Elgar played a captain’s knock with an unbeaten 96 to guide South Africa to a seven-wicket victory over India in the last session of the fourth day of the second Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Chasing 240 for victory, the hosts resumed their second innings at 118 for 2 after rain had delayed the start of the match on the penultimate day after two sessions were washed out.

Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen added 57 runs to the overnight total of 118/2 before the latter became the only batter to be dismissed when he was caught at slips off Mohammed Shami for 40. South Africa’s score was then 175.

Temba Bavuma who replaced van der Dussen got a life when Shardul Thakur dropped him off his own bowling before the batsman had opened his score. He settled down quickly to remain unbeaten on 23 and guided the hosts home in the company of his captain who fittingly scored the winning run as South Africa scored 234 for 3.

The three-match Test series is now tied 1-1 after India won the first Test at Centurion by 113 runs.

Brief Scores:

India               202/10 and 266/10

South Africa  229/10 and 243/3 (Dean Elgar 96 not out)
