Afghanistan’s former President  Ashraf Ghani has taken refuge in the United Arab Emirates.

Ghani had abdicated his position and presumably flown into either Tajikistan or Turkmenistan soon after handing over his resignation to Vice President Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday before the Taliban claimed the capital.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) can confirm that the UAE has welcomed President Ashraf Ghani and his family into the country on humanitarian grounds,” the ministry said in a statement.
On Sunday, Ghani left Afghanistan after briefing his deputy, Vice-President Abdullah Abdullah about his leaving the country as the Taliban had reached the outskirts of capital Kabul.

Ghani said he fled to prevent “bloodshed,” though many Afghans feel he had shirked his responsibility.

The Russian media has accused Ghani of taking away millions in cash from the country. Another report originating in Russia blamed him for taking away six cars with him.
