Decades of the wait to meet her brother separated by the partition are finally over for 67-year-old Sakina Biwi, a resident of Sheikhpura in Pakistan.

In a couple of days, she will be meeting her elder brother Gurmail Singh Grewal who has lived all his life across the border on the Indian side of Punjab.

The meeting though virtual is enough to bring tears of joy to the brother-sister duo who have all along endured the pain of being separated.

Sakina was born eight years after the partition and grew up watching her parents live with the loss of leaving their son behind in India, while the family moved to Pakistan.

She made it her lifelong mission to find him. It has taken more than five decades to accomplish this dream.

Last week her search ended in Jassowal Sudan village near Ludhiana.

During the turmoil of 1947, Gurmail was left behind in India along with his mother. After his father wrote repeatedly to the authorities only his wife managed to go to Pakistan.

Gurmail then five-year-old was left behind as he was untraceable and the authorities did not have orders to wait. Unable to bear the pain of separation from her son, Gurmail’s mother passed away when Sakina was two years old.

Sakina managed to trace a letter written by her brother when he was in class 8th in which he mentioned being brought up by a Sikh family in India.

After decades of failed efforts a Pakistani Youtuber Nasir Dhillon of Punjabi Lehar- a project to bridge the gap between people from either side of the border - finally managed to find Gurmail with the help of the local village Panchayat.

He uploaded a video message of Sakina appealing to look for her brother on his Youtube channel. When the village sarpanch saw the video they confirmed that Gurmail lived in their village.

Sakina and Gurmail will soon be meeting virtually once Sakina has recovered from her gall bladder surgery.
