56 killed as suicide bomber attacks Peshawar mosque

The death toll in the suicide attack in a Shia mosque in Peshawar has reached 56 while the attack has left  at least157 persons injured many of them with seriously, according to a report in Dawn newspaper.

Police said the blast occurred inside the mosque located in the city's Kocha Risaldar area during Friday prayers.

No group or individual has yet claimed the attack so far. GeoTV has released the following video on the attack on Twitter:

Soon after the attack, officials at the Lady reading Hospital said at least 30 bodies were brought to the hospital.

The dead include Peshawar’s one police official.

The CCTV footage clearly show the suicide bomber opening fire to enter the mosque where people had gathered for Friday prayers.

Following the attack, two explosions occurred inside the mosque.

Media reported there was total chaos in the Lady Reading Hospital Emergency department, with doctors struggling to move the injured to the operating theatres for surgeries.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has strongly condemned the attack and directed provision of immediate medical treatment to the injured, his office said in a statement.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid also condemned the attack, saying he had directed the provincial chief secretary and inspector general of police to submit a report.
