Amidst serious environmental challenges due to rampant exploitation of natural resources and deforestation by Islamabad, locals have once again started raising their voices against Islamabad. On Wednesday, a large group of youth led by the Jammu and Kashmir National Student’s Front (JKSF) held a big protest at Khaigala, Poonch.

Prof A Sajjad Raja, Chairman of the National Equality Party of Jammu, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and Ladakh (JKGBL) who hails from the area and lives in London in exile, posted this video wrote on and posted a video of the protests on Twitter:

Protests continue in #POJK. We once again warn the authorities to be loyal to the ppl rather than to the #Pakistani Establishment. #Pakistan is plundering our resources & we demand our basic human rights be restored. DAM HAMARAY QABZA TUMHARA NAMANZOOR ; CHOR LUTEREY HAIY Hkhaigala, Poonch

The youth are seen raising slogans to reject Islamabad making a dam on their river for use of Pakistani and calling the Pakistani establishment "thieves and looters."

Earlier, locals in occupied territory have raised concern over the indiscriminate felling of trees for timber, leading to environmental degradation and unusually warm temperatures in the illegally-occupied region.

Pakistan’s first major power project on River Jhelum - Mangla Dam - was constructed in Muzaffarabad. It supplied power to the entire Punjab but people in POK continued to suffer from power cuts and shortages. Pakistan has unrestrainedly misused the occupied region's natural resources, constructed several dams, and diverted the natural flow of rivers.

It has even allowed the timber mafia to operate openly in the region and cut trees rampantly.

The locals have in the past also protested against the discriminatory policies of Islamabad for misusing the region's natural resources for its gain.
