At the threshold of the twenty-first century, India was witnessing massive shifts in its social, economic, and daily life. The reflection of this changing and new India was clearly visible in the entertainment industry here. Following the 'cable TV' revolution in the nineties, Indian television was hit by a tsunami of family dramas (daily soaps). These 'Saas-Bahu' sagas had completely captivated audiences in every household back then.

Right during this era, a young producer accurately caught the pulse that television shouldn't be limited to just family melodramas; it should also encompass real emotions of real people, healthy competition, intellect, and glamour. The name of this visionary producer, who showed the courage to swim against the tide and brought the shiny new era of non-fiction and reality TV to India, is Fazila Allana.

Starting her journey from Mumbai and establishing her dominance on a global level today, the path of Fazila Allana, Founder and Managing Director of 'Sol Productions', is deeply inspiring. Her journey is that of a versatile entrepreneur possessing immense corporate talent and boundless courage.

Early education and surrounding environments play a lion's share in shaping any successful entrepreneur. Fazila was born on May 20, 1970, in a bustling and cosmopolitan area of South Mumbai. She completed her schooling at Mumbai's renowned 'Queen Mary School'. From childhood, she was influenced by Mumbai's fast-paced commercial and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

After her schooling, she enrolled in Sydenham College to study commerce and economics, completing her graduation in commerce in 1991. The strong foundation of her business acumen, understanding of profit-loss math, and strategic approach was laid right here. Later, when building her own company in an unpredictable sector like media, she reaped massive benefits from this.

After graduating, she worked for a few years in the city of Oulu in Finland, where her professional outlook became global.

Upon returning to India after her stint in Finland, Fazila worked with an established media house like UTV. This period made her understand the nuances of entertainment world. UTV entrusted her with the responsibility of their operations in Malaysia.

While working in Malaysia, she managed cross-border content development and global media ventures. It was here that she took practical lessons on how operations are run on an international level, how budgets are handled, and how proper coordination is maintained with technicians across various countries.

Driven by the ambition to create something of her own after the experience gained in Malaysia, Fazila, along with her colleague from UTV, Kamna Nirula Menezes, founded Sol Productions Pvt. Ltd. in January 2003.

Established on a meager budget and limited resources, this company has today grown into a massive organization creating thousands of hours of premium 'non-fiction' content on Indian television.

To run any successful corporate entity, accurate division of work and responsibilities is essential. Fazila kept the reins of the company's creative direction, client relations, and operational growth with her, while Kamna handled production design and the day-to-day operations.

Instead of getting lost in the crowd of the then-prevalent 'fiction' series, this duo of two strong women focused directly on 'non-fiction' and, in no time, propelled 'Sol' to the pinnacle of success.

Fazila Allana's approach to production has always been honest and directly connected with the audience. Speaking about how exactly Koffee With Karan —a show that changed the history of Indian television and has become an integral part of today's pop-culture—was born, Fazila shares an interesting anecdote:

"It's not at all like we had planned this show way in advance. Just as many brilliant creative ideas strike quite suddenly, something similar happened in this case. We were handling the Star Parivaar Awards at that time, and since Parivaar (family) is always the central theme in Karan Johar's films, we asked him to host that award show. But to that he replied, 'I would prefer doing a chat show rather than an award show'. And thus, by finding the right person at exactly the right time, this show took shape."

She further explains, "Our main objective itself is to bring these celebrities before the audience just like ordinary human beings. How they behave in their own homes, what their funny habits are, what fears are hidden in their minds—we attempt to bring all this out to the public. Because the audience loves to see that real 'human' hidden inside their favorite stars."

Beyond Koffee With Karan, Sol Productions has given the audience several iconic shows like theThey took the celebrity dance reality show Nach Baliye to a whole new height of grandeur. This show elevated the production budget and presentation of Indian reality shows to a very high standard.

Alongside this, their Swayamvar Series (Rakhi Ka Swayamvar, Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega) was the boldest and equally controversial experiment in the history of Indian television. The brilliant idea of converting real-life wedding ceremonies into a reality show on television shattered all TRP records back then.

Fazila possesses an excellent understanding of exactly what the audience wants to watch and how to keep them glued to their TV screens. Through various shows like 'Zara Nachke Dikha', Kya Mast Hai Life, and Mai Ka Lal, she also produced content for youth and child audiences.

The true success of any modern corporate company depends on its ability to adapt to changing times. A core corporate principle of the operations at Sol Productions is: Creation, Production, and Implementation.

If Fazila has one supreme corporate trait, it is her 'platform agnostic' approach. Meaning, instead of relying solely on one channel or one language, 'Sol Productions' today provides its content to over 40 broadcast channels and 'OTT' platforms.

Another prime example of her business brilliance is that she did not restrict the company's business to the Hindi language alone but expanded it into more than 5 languages.

Speaking about this model of her work, Fazila says, "No show is too small or too big for us; we design every show exactly according to its budget and creative requirements." This flexible business model keeps 'Sol' two steps ahead in today's era of fierce competition.

Successfully producing more than 50 shows to date is, in the truest sense, a massive victory for their motto of "Creative Minds, Quality Productions, and Access to Talent."

Taking a business to a global level requires an immense capacity to make solid financial and strategic decisions. Around 2007-08, Fazila Allana very smartly forged a strategic partnership with Zodiak Media (now named as the Banijay Group). This single corporate masterstroke cleared the path for Sol Productions to bring international formats directly to India and secure massive financial backing on a global scale.

For an Indian production house to expand its business by directly partnering with such a global media conglomerate is a testament to Fazila Shahabuddin Allana's business acumen.

When the internet became cheaper in India post-2015, a massive wave of OTT platforms swept the country. The audience sitting in front of the TV slowly started shifting towards their mobile phones. Many veteran producers fell behind in this transition, but Fazila Allana stood her ground firmly and proved herself here as well.

Accurately gauging exactly what the young audience in the digital era wants, she began producing 'non-fiction web series' for platforms like Hotstar, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. Through shows like Social Currency'on Netflix, she demonstrated this multi-platform expansion of her company.

Sol Productions is today an integral part of the Banijay Group, and Fazila's strategic partnership and extensive experience have played a huge role in the expansion of the main Banijay Asia banner. Grand OTT projects produced under the 'Banijay Asia' banner, like The Great Indian Kapil Show and Roar of The Lion, are considered examples of this global integration and combined corporate strength.

The entertainment sector has always been notorious for its unpredictable timings, chaos, and mismanagement; however, Fazila enforced strict 'corporate discipline within Sol Productions. She always provided a safe and highly professional environment for the technicians, writers, and artists working with her. She has also always emphasized providing proper training to artists and technicians newly stepping into the entertainment sector.

Her journey from starting a small production house to becoming a core part of a giant media network is astonishing. Successfully running a production house for over 21 consecutive years in a fiercely competitive field like entertainment is no ordinary feat.

Leaving her distinct mark on the Indian television universe, it would be absolutely right to say that Fazila Allana is one of the architects of the non-fiction era.
