In a rebuff to the inimical narrative spread by fringe elements, a small muslim businessman from Kolkata is quietly making a vital contribution to the country’s 75th year of independence celebrations – Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Salauddin Mondal who runs a taxtile manufacturing unit in Kolkata has been shortlisted as one of the nine flag suppliers by the Ministry of Culture.

His company has been enlisted for the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ programme, a brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wherein all Indians are expected to hoist the national tricolor in their houses and offices between August 13 and 15 to mark 75 years of India’s independence.

‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ is an initiative under the aegis of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ which aims to invoke a feeling of patriotism in people.

People are encouraged to hoist the tricolor in their homes and workplaces. They can also pin a flag virtually at https://harghartiranga.com along with posting a selfie with the flag on the site.

The government has set a target of voluntary hoisting of 250 million flags at homes across India.

The programme is likely to generate a demand for around 30 crore national flags.

On July 20, the central government amended the national flag code to make it easier for people to hoist the flag at their homes.

Saluddin Mondal’s Uddin enterprises has already delivered around 30 lakh national flags across the country.

His aim is to finally make three to four crore tricolors which he will dispatch to various states.

Haling from a village in south 24 parganas, Salauddin has been providing the flags to state governments of Jharkhand, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

Several organisations under the state and central government have already reached out to him to furnish them with the flags before this year’s independence day.

The cost of each flag is between Rs 24 – 30.
