Deputy Secretary for Political Affairs in the Embassy of the United States of America (USA) Michelle Elms visited Darul Uloom, Deoband, Uttar Pradesh to acquaint herself with the functioning of one of the oldest and the largest Islamic seminaries in Asia.

Michelle Elms met the chief administrator Maulana Mufti Abul Qasim Naumani and others. She was taken around the campus and briefed about the history of the seminary. Naumani explained to her how Deoband carries on its mission of educating the poor and backward Muslims. He told her that this institution was set up in the British era to counter the Apostasy movement.

Maulana Naumani told her that the students get free accommodation, food, and education. He told her that it was because of the movement of Darul Uloom Deoband that today centers of Islamic studies are established as Madrasas all over the world for imparting Islamic education. He said that Darul Uloom Deoband and all madrasas impart the message of peace and harmony.

He told the visiting US dignitary that Darul Uloom also plays a basic role in building national ethos. It’s primarily meant for imparting religious education and is not affiliated with any political organization.

Maulana Mufti Abul Qasim Naumani of Darul Uloom Deoband said that historically this institution has remained away from politics, it has played a role in bringing about social changes. Since the independence of India, the scholars of Darul Uloom Deoband have played a role in guiding the country and the nation on the path of righteousness.

Maulana Mufti Abul Qasim Naumani told the US diplomat that students also imparted education in English language and computer and they also go for higher studies.

Michelle Elms praised Darul Uloom Deoband and said “it is a big thing that the role of an institution and its graduates is so clear and transparent. Darul Uloom Deoband gives the message of peace and harmony and opposes terrorism.”

Michelle Elms was particularly appreciative of the library of Darul Uloom Deoband and said being there she experienced spiritual peace.
