Iran fired missiles and drones at targets across the Gulf region while Israel and the United States carried out strikes inside Iran, further intensifying the conflict in the Middle East.

Attacks targeted oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and a ship off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. Several Gulf states said their air defences intercepted incoming drones.

Meanwhile, six members of the Iran women's national football team will remain in Australia after receiving asylum, the country's Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said. Another player who had earlier been granted asylum decided to return to Iran.

Strait of Hormuz tensions

Donald Trump said there were no reports that Iran had planted explosives in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20 per cent of global oil shipments pass.

The US said it destroyed more than a dozen Iranian vessels suspected of laying mines to prevent attempts to block the vital shipping lane.

Iran’s warning that it could stop oil shipments through the strait has created volatility in global energy markets, particularly affecting Asian economies heavily dependent on Gulf oil.

Israeli strikes in Iran and Lebanon

The Israeli military said it was carrying out simultaneous strikes across Iran and against targets linked to Hezbollah in Beirut in Lebanon.

Three Israeli airstrikes hit the southern suburbs of Beirut, including the area of Haret Hreik.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Israeli strikes in eastern and southern Lebanon killed 14 people and wounded more than two dozen others.

Iran holds funeral for military leaders

Iran held a public funeral in Tehran for commanders killed during the early days of the war.

Among those honoured were Abdolrahim Mousavi, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, and Mohammad Pakpour, head of the paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Drones and air defence alerts across Gulf

Oman said it shot down an Iranian drone while another crashed near the port of Duqm, a key resupply point for the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

Air defence systems were also activated in Doha, the capital of Qatar, where interceptions were reported.

Bahrain sounded air raid sirens as a precaution against possible incoming attacks.

Global diplomatic efforts

China said it was focusing on diplomatic mediation. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Foreign Minister Wang Yi had been speaking with counterparts while special envoy Zhai Jun was travelling across the region.

Europe warns of energy costs

European Union officials warned the conflict is already pushing up energy costs.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the war had cost EU citizens about 3 billion euros in higher fossil fuel imports, with gas prices rising by 50 per cent and oil prices by 27 per cent.

Ukraine offers security support

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a Ukrainian delegation led by negotiator Rustem Umerov would travel to Gulf countries to help strengthen defences as tensions escalate.

Humanitarian situation in Lebanon

Lebanon’s social affairs minister Haneen Sayed said the war has displaced around 780,000 people in the country.

About 120,000 displaced people are currently staying in shelters while aid shipments from Europe and other countries arrive.
